Finding inspiration in Amsterdam and about creativity
We sat down with the creative mind behind the perfume Walk with Me, Chester Gibs. As an olfactory artist, Chester takes us on a journey through his creation process and shares insights into his inspirations.
What sparks your imagination and creativity?
Creative and positive people! Music and scent conjure images for me. Nature also stimulates my imagination.
What gives you a feeling of excitement and a sense of wonder?
The thrill of something exciting on the horizon. Like when I went to New York to work on my perfume with Christophe and Tanja. I knew I only had two weeks to learn as much as I could, and that gave me a kind of rush. My sense of wonder doesn’t come from just one thing. As you get older, you think you’ve seen it all, and then suddenly, something surprises you again. The fact that wonder always exist, when you least expect it, is beautiful.
What does the term “hedonism” mean to you?
Living freely, trying to enjoy everything. But it comes with risks, and deep down, you know there are consequences.
Are there places in Amsterdam that inspire you?
The view from my balcony (Vondelpark), the NDSM area with its galleries, museums like the Rijksmuseum, but more for walking around. Foam, Electric Ladyland (fluorescent art). These are the places where I feel like a kid again. It’s important to allow that feeling. Like creating art, it’s a kind of playground for me.
If you were to choose a time and place in Amsterdam to wear your perfume, where would it be?
Fall and winter, especially winter, while biking. I also think it would be fun to wear it in Paris in the summer, a fresh, warm scent like a light scarf you wear.
What is your favorite scent in Amsterdam?
The smell after a night out at a club. By the end of the night, there’s a mix of sweaty people and perfumes, and then you step out into the fresh air, I like that complete olfactive switch, that contrast! And the smell of the Vondelpark in the early morning.
