A Play for Music + Scent: Narcissus

Imagine, a concert full of sensory magic that entices all our senses, ears, eyes and even our nose. Music that totally carries us away, melodical, fiery and mystical. A deeply sensory experience.

A Play for Music & Scent.
Narcissus is a musical drama by composer Calliope Tsoupaki for scent and 6 musicians (piano, violin, cello, bass clarinet, horn and harp).

Nieuw Amsterdams Peil started in 2005 by violinist Heleen Hulst, and pianist Gerard Bouwhuis. All NAP's musicians specialize in avant-garde music. In this new production Narcissus, scent plays an key role together with the instruments.

The Greek/Dutch composer Calliope Tsoupaki has her own quirky, lyrical style, combining traditional Byzantine, mediaeval and modern European influences and styles to form an intense, melodic , lyrical and mystical idiomatic musical language all of its own.

Narcissus is a musical drama in its purest form without text, libretto or song, charged with dramatic tension. During the concert, 5 layers of subtle scent are dispersed and together with the music, will lead to the culmination of the Narcissus accord.
It is the first time ever that scent en sound have been composed to interact with each other in one piece, influencing each other during the creative process and the concert.

The composer worked together with scent expert, Tanja Deurloo, Annindriya who developed the various scent layers within the composition and Dutch designer Petra Blaise (Inside Outside), who specializes in textile, landscape and exhibition design, designed the stage.

The première of Narcissus: A Play for Music & Scent will take place on Saturday 9th November, 2013 during the November Music Festival in Den Bosch, where NAP will be in the spotlight as "ensemble in residence". Following this, they will perform at several concert halls in the Netherlands, amongst others Korzo The Hague and 'Muziekgebouw' in Amsterdam.

The production is very successful. Narcissus is supported by Fonds Podiumkunsten, Amsterdam Fund for Art, SNS Reaal Fonds and the festivals November Music and Dag in de Branding. More and more people are investing and nearely 90% has now been financed. We hope to have the final 10% this month so that we have sufficient funds for the last phase of the production, especially for Petra Blaise's stage work.
With your contribution we can accomplish the the design which enables sound and scent to blend seamlessly.
